Also known in some regions of the North as Manitoba maple, the boxeder tree is a member of the maple family, but has a very different set of unique traits. It has a creamy, soft structure that makes it perfect for carving and turning bowls. In nature, however, stress on the tree's fast growing time can produce a vibrant color change similar to the effect of the ambrosia beetle in other maple trees, resulting in a pattern of beautiful red flames in the wood.
